Four qualify for state wrestling

The wrestling team traveled to Herington for its first tournament after winter break. The team tied for sixth place with five individual placers.

            Senior Brendan H. continued his perfect season with a first place finish. Placing third in the tournament were senior Andrew S. and junior Trenton H., followed by junior Alec W. and freshman Glen B., who both placed fourth.

On Jan. 11, the team traveled to Halstead for a two-day tournament. The team finished tenth out of 21 teams.

Brendan H. suffered his first loss of the season in the finals, 5-4, placing second in the tournament. Andrew S. finished fourth, along with sophomore Chance M.

Despite earning his first loss, Harshman set the school record for the most career wins. His current career record is 110-16, beating Seth Wessel’s career record, which was 105-45.

The team scored its season high at the Eureka tournament scoring 92 points, placing seven of the nine wrestlers competing.

Brendan H. finished second losing a tough match, 5-2, to the third-ranked wrestler in 4A in the finals. He raised his new tech fall record earning his 13th in the semi finals.

            The rescheduled Kaw Valley duals turned out to be a successful day for the wrestlers. Many of the wrestlers placed and came home with hardware. The team finished first for the fifth time out of the nine years that it has participated. First place finishers included: Brendan H., Ben G., Brendan P. and Trenton H., followed by Glen B. and Chance M. with second place finishes.

            The team went to regionals in Eureka on Feb. 15-16. Placing and advancing to the state tournament were Brendan H. with a first place finish. Andrew S. placing third and Glen B. and Aaron W. finishing in fourth place. These four wrestlers will continue to practice through the next week as they enter the state tournament in Hays on Feb. 22-23.
