USD 284 NEWS RELEASE

USD 284 NEWS RELEASE

October 19, 2009

The flu outbreak continues to accelerate.   The schools of Chase County are now approaching 25% student absence levels and those numbers are increasing on an hourly basis.  USD 284 is working proactively and closely with government agencies to do whatever can be done to prevent the spread of the flu in USD 284.    Listed below are the key elements of our efforts.

  1. Chase County Health, the US Center for Disease Control (CDC) and KDHE (Kansas Department of Health and Environment) are all STRONGLY recommending that school districts do NOT close their schools buildings.
  2. We have been advised that closing schools will NOT provide long-term relief.
  3. At this time school closing is NOT being considered in USD 284.
  4. School closing in USD 284 will be considered ONLY if staff absence rates were to get to the point that academic services are no longer possible and/or school closure is mandated by a government agency(s).
  5. All students with a fever of any type will be sent or taken home immediately and without exception.
  6. Students sent home with any kind of fever will not be allowed to return to school until they are fever-free for a minimum of 48 hours.
  7. Parents are STRONGLY encouraged to keep sick students home and remain at home until they are fever free for a minimum of 48 hours.
  8. All student absences due to parental requests to keep them home to treat and/or avoid the flu will be classified as excused.
  9. Please contact the appropriate building office for academic makeup and assignments.
  10. We may not have enough available substitute teachers to cover all sick teachers.
  11. Classes and grades at all three buildings may be combined if faculty absences do not allow 100% coverage of all classes.
  12. Activities will be considered on a case by case basis.
  13. The CCMS Chili supper (10/20) has been rescheduled for November 5th
  14. The CCMS field trip to the Cosmosphere (10/21) will be cancelled and rescheduled.
  15. Parent-Teacher Conferences (10/22 & 10/23) have NOT been cancelled at this time.
  16. CCHS football (10/23) and volleyball (10/24) contests have NOT been cancelled at this time.

The school district understands and appreciates that this is a very difficult and stressful situation for our students and their families.   Academics are important but the health of our students and staff is always our first priority.      All decisions regarding the school district in response to this flu outbreak will always be made on that basis.   We are doing the best we can in a tough situation.  Your patience and understanding is both needed and appreciated.   Thank you.
